Roger Ames, composer and arts educator, has written operas and musicals for Boston Lyric Opera, Utah Opera, Central City Opera, (En Mis Palabras), Tulsa Opera, Lake George Opera, Off-Broadway, London Fringe, the Hartford Stage and others. He is currently composer in residence at Great Neck North High School, resident musician at New Dramatists, NYC, and Music Director of Pantomonium. His vocal chamber piece for quartet, harp and ‘cello, poetry by Laura Harrington, was recently performed at the Nautilus “Rough Cuts” series, directed by Ben Krywosz. Ames is currently working with librettist Jeff Gilden on a one-act opera commission for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids, called Shadows, and has just been commissioned to write a large work for chorus, orchestra, and dancers for the Strathmore Performing Arts Center in Maryland. Collaborating with Ron Hutchinson, book writer, he and lyricist Elizabeth Bassine have recently completed the first draft of a musical based on the award-winning Welsh novel, How Green Was My Valley, by Richard Llewellyn. His Requiem For Our Time, set using poems of Anne Sexton, was recently nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in music. He also is a principal author of Opera America’s Music! Words! Opera! textbook series.
